Who is Kip McGrath?

Kip McGrath is a qualified Australian teacher and former principal, who in 1974, after feeling frustrated with aspects of the state education system, began tutoring students who needed extra help, to get ahead in their studies. Today he is Chairman of Kip McGrath Education Centres Limited, based in New South Wales, Australia.

How Kip McGrath Education Centres began

Having taught in small country towns for several years, Kip and Dugnija McGrath moved to a larger town in New South Wales in 1974. The tutoring business began as a second job to help pay the bigger mortgage and at first Kip went to the students' homes. This proved to be difficult. Next a centre was set up in the garage of their home. Initially only reading was taught, but as demand increased people also asked for tuition in maths. They moved the centre to professional premises and began expanding. Before long six centres were established and they had 365 students each week.

The material, which was organised into computer activities, textbooks, activity sheets, booklets and cassettes, made use of technology so children remain interested and motivated. By 1986 core materials for the centres had been written and their success proven; the first Kip McGrath Education Centre franchise was established in Australia.
